SEASON PREMIERE: To begin Season 9 of TV’s most popular comedy, romance is in the air – and some of that air has turned sour. Things seem to be going well for Penny and Leonard (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Johnny Galecki), because they’re committing to an impulsive wedding in Las Vegas – but not so well for Sheldon and Amy (Jim Parsons, Mayim Bialik), who are taking some time apart from one another. But by the end of the episode, expect something to shift, somewhere…

SEASON PREMIERE: Gotham was one of last season’s few bright spots from the broadcast networks’ crop of new fall shows, and Season 2 begins with the show, and its ambitions, bigger and better than ever. This new cycle is called “the rise of the villains,” and based on this year’s first two episodes, it delivers on that promise – while making Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) even more central to the overall story.

SEASON PREMIERE: It’s Season 9 for this music competition series, which has yet to crown a superstar (quick: name one winner of The Voice), but has proven an invaluable career-boosting showcase for the show’s judges. This year, Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani return, along with Voice stalwarts Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.

SERIES PREMIERE: This new comedy wants to be, and even borrows the extended-family multiple-storyline structure of, ABC’s Modern Family. It moves into the same neighborhood, mostly because of its strong cast – James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, Thomas Sadoski, Betsy Brandt, Colin Hanks – but doesn’t connect as instantly as Modern Family did when it premiered. But it’s a show to keep sampling, which is more than can be said for most new shows this season. For my full review

SERIES PREMIERE: “The only future you cannot see is your own,” one character says to another in this TV sequel to the Tom Cruise movie, explaining the roles of “pre-cog” see-the-future vision in a “post-pre-crime” world. All the technical effects are cool, as they should be – but the future of this sci-fi series, based on the characters and feel of the pilot, doesn’t seem all that bright. SERIES PREMIERE: This is one of those drama series that falls apart the second you stop to think about its massive improbabilities and inconsistencies – but if you don’t stop to do that, it’s entertaining enough. It’s certainly got the most visually arresting promo of the fall season – a naked but tattooed-neck-to-foot woman emerging from a large bag in Times Square. That woman, played by Jaimie Alexander (last seen as a guest star on ABC’s Marvel’s Agen

There were lots of happy winners at Sunday’s Emmy Awards, but perhaps none happier than HBO, which ended the evening with top honors for two first-time winners: Veep as best comedy, and Game of Thrones as best drama…

Even without FX’s Justified in the mix on the drama side, and Showtime’s Episodes on the comedy side, this year’s Emmy nominees for best series are, indeed, impressive in both their excellence and eclecticism. For Outstanding Drama Series, AMC’s Mad Men has one last chance to win again, while its star, Jon Hamm, has one final chance to win for the first time. Other series include the AMC newcomer Better Call Saul, PBS’s Downton Abbey, HBO’s Game of Thrones, Sh

Part 3 of 3. The Wyrley Ripper finally is unmasked in the conclusion of this Sherlock Holmes-adjacent miniseries, which stars Martin Clunes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, trying his hand at solving a real crime for a change – as he did, on this occasion, in real life. Check local listings.
