Showtime's latest publicity artwork for Dexter bills him as an "Avenging Angel" while picturing him in both a crucifixion pose and with bloody wings. So there's an overriding religious motif at work as Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) again cuts to the chase while also eluding capture in Season 6 of the pay cable network's longest-running and most successful drama series...

Showtime's Homeland, a new drama series about a returning POW and the CIA agent who suspects him of having gone over to the enemy, is based on an Israeli series, but producers have made this Americanized version all their own. And, thanks to a superb cast and a brilliantly fresh approach to storytelling, they've also made it a better TV series than anything the broadcast networks have turned out this fall...

Speaking at an RTDNA conference the other day, Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News, decried the lack of investigative reporting by television news operations these days. "I think a lot of people shy away from it because it's expensive and it's difficult and it takes a lot of time...We succeed at 60 Minutes by doing it and by caring about it and by working hard to make it as interesting as we can, because there is a place for it and I think there's a hunger for it out there..."

Are you ready for some new networks? Well, actually, old networks, reinventing themselves in search of new viewers. History International is now H2. And on Tuesday (Oct. 4), Discovery's HD Theater becomes Velocity. HI hasn't actually been "international" for awhile now, unless you think Secret Missions of the Civil War has a global focus. But it's probably now more "history" than ever...

Be patient a little longer. TV is about to improve greatly with a sudden crop of exciting new offerings -- starting Sunday with a sudden glut of quality TV. The newest Ken Burns documentary epic on PBS, Prohibition, begins Sunday, as do Showtime's new Homeland series and the same network's Season 6 premiere of Dexter. But between now and then, we've got four new less than superb prime-time premieres with which to contend...

The TV fall season is an annual tradition that, anemic though it seems today, has endured for half a century -- but 50 years ago, broadcast TV gave us a lot more about which to be enthusiastic. In 1961, by this point, CBS already had introduced the brilliant courtroom drama The Defenders, and had Carl Reiner's superb The Dick Van Dyke Show waiting in the wings for an early October debut...

ABC's Pan Am arrives on schedule opposite CBS's The Good Wife this Sunday at 10 p.m. ET. It isn't exactly a soft landing for the pre-feminist 1960s stewardesses and jet age pilots who are circling the globe when the women offered coffee, tea or milk with a smile, and occasionally added something extra...

In addition to all the other new series and fresh changes in the 2011 fall TV lineup, there were two very noteworthy -- and very impressive -- changes of the guard on network TV. Ted Danson stepped in as the new head of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on CBS, and James Spader became the new CEO running things at NBC's The Office...
