A luminous young star can work wonders for any premise. Which Gina Rodriguez does as the title character in The CW’s Jane the Virgin. She’s arguably the most engaging newcomer of the fall season...

The San Francisco Giants won yesterday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, and tonight the Cards will try to even the series. We’ll see whether or not that’s in the Cards.

This show is so good. Each week, while continuing certain story lines in a linear and clever fashion, it also finds ways to hone in on specific legal cases, highlight selected major characters, and do so in a way that showcases the acting, writing, directing – everything. The only problem with this series is that, during football season, time-slot overruns can, and do, wreak havoc with the scheduled start times.

SEASON PREMIERE: What a thriller of a season opener. The Walking Dead doesn’t just hit the ground running to start Season 5 – it hits the ground kicking and screaming and howling and fighting. The show picks up right where last season left off, with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and some of his post-apocalyptic comrades held captive by the deadly and deceitful folks at Terminus. And the tension it builds in the opening minutes is breathtaking. And I mean that literally, because it takes your

This episode of Homeland clarifies, even more, the direction this season intends to take, with Carrie (Claire Danes) gathering allies to investigate what went wrong with the intel that resulted in the bombing of a wedding party in Pakistan. This finally brings her back together with Saul (Mandy Patinkin), but not necessarily as a partnership – but with or without him, Carrie, like Homeland, is on the right track.

SERIES PREMIERE: The team behind HBO’s excellent In Treatment are back with another home run – this one starring Dominic West from The Wire and Ruth Wilson from Luther as married people – married to other people, that is – who embark on an affair, in a story told, in turn, from his and her point of view. It’s a subtle yet bold drama, demanding viewers to pay close attention, then rewarding that attention with a string of provocative details, twists, revelations and

The arrival of Showtime’s The Affair, perhaps the year’s best new drama, is great news for quality TV fans. But it’s one more hour of great TV, on a night with so many already…

Bill Hader returned to SNL as host last night and, of course, our most anticipated moment was the return of Stefon, the accidental New York City tour guide for "Weekend Update." The hipster character recommends outsider, inappropriate nightclubs...

Last night’s Game 1 between the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles went extra innings – what else did you expect, from this particular contest? – and resulted in the Chiefs scrapping and scraping to emerge, after 10 innings, with an 8-6 victory and a 1-0 lead in the ALCS series. That game went late. This one begins early, and is played in daylight – the way all baseball games used to be played, when I was a kid. Sigh. And I’m not sighing because I’m nost
