It’s been 22 years since this well-made crime caper and character study was released, in 1998. But my, does it hold up: great story, sizzling romance, quirky characters, and a thrilling, unpredictable climax. Almost everyone teaming for this crime drama saw their stock rise afterward: director Steven Soderbergh, stars George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez (who make a great screen pair here, as smoky-sexy as Bogart and Bacall), and author Elmore Leonard, who wrote the book on which Out of

SPECIAL: Oprah Winfrey has produced and will host, for her OWN Network, a brand-new two-part talk show special, beginning tonight and concluding tomorrow. Don’t expect her to grab a handheld mike and roam the studio audience, or even have one – but this socially distanced special nonetheless will allow her to converse with guests about the very current events, including the protests as well as the pandemic. Scheduled guests include Stacey Abrams, Ava DuVernay, Keisha Lance Bottoms, D

This is a warning, not a recommendation. It’s worth noting, however, that ABC’s The Bachelor has been playing video matchmaker for almost two decades now – since 2002.  Because ABC sometimes crammed two cycles of Bachelor dating into a single season, that means the network already has produced and televised 24 editions of The Bachelor.  Edition 25 is scheduled to premiere next year, in 2021, but how you stage and produce Th

Writer-director John Hughes absolutely nailed the American cultural zeitgeist with this 1986 comedy, which stars Matthew Broderick as a high schooler with lots of brains and savvy, but very little motivation or respect for authority. Alan Ruck and Mia Sara play his cohorts in skipping school for a day, and some of the most memorable of Bueller’s moments come courtesy of the actors playing the exasperated authority figures Bueller leaves behind in his wake. The two-day Love, American Style marathon continues on Decades today, and there are a pair of installments of this comedy anthology series that deserve special mention. At 4 p.m. ET, there’s an episode featuring Burt Reynolds and Elizabeth Ashley, just before he became a cinematic superstar. And at 6 p.m. ET, there’s the 1972 episode “Love and the Happy Days,” which was producer Garry Marshall’s pilot for Happy Days, which helped push also-ran AB

I’m familiar with native Tuvan throat singing from Russia, thanks to the brilliant Ondar CD Back Tuva Future. But this film, a Sundance Film Festival entry presented in this virtual We Are One: Global Film Festival lineup and website, looks at Throat Singing in Kangirsuk – which I had to look up. Kangirsuk, it turns out, isn’t in Russia. It’s in Canada: an Inuit village in northern Nunavik in Quebec. Don’t arrive late, or blink: This documentary
