If it’s true that imitation is the sincerest form of television, as the late Fred Allen famously said, the new fall season looks like a most sincere season indeed...

The AFI really is on a roll with its AFI specials of late. Last year’s tribute, to Diane Keaton, was spectacularly warm and amusing, and this year’s tribute (shown earlier this summer on TNT), to George Clooney, is another instant classic. Gathering to honor and/or poke fun at Clooney are such luminaries as Jimmy Kimmel, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Julianna Margulies, Bill Murray, Richard Kind, Don Cheadle, and Clooney’s wife, Amal, and father, Nick. And the tribute is fol

Tonight’s episode is called “Quite a Ride” – and already this season on Better Call Saul, it has been. I’m now seeing these new episodes just as you are, as they’re televised by AMC. And even on a holiday night, I’ll be sure to be there.

This 2018 documentary by Julie Cohen and Betsy West, along with Morgan Neville’s documentary this year about Fred Rogers called Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, has enjoyed enthusiastic and almost universal acclaim. RGB is a profile of the life and career of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and receives its TV premiere tonight on CNN.

This is a repeat of Tuesday’s premiere episode of this new HBO Sports talk show, set in an African-American barbershop with LeBron James presiding as overall host. The guests for the opener range from New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Los Angeles Sparks WNBA basketball player Candace Parker to Golden State Warriors NBA player Draymond Green, Snoop Dogg… and Jon Stewart. And The Shop, from its opening moments, hits the ground running with an exuberant confidence and

Howard Hawks directed this 1952 screwball comedy, which gives Cary Grant, usually a matinee idol, a chance to act supremely silly – which he did to such stellar effect a decade before in Arsenic and Old Lace. Here, he plays a stodgy scientist whose personality is altered significantly when he invents a virtual Fountain of Youth formula. Co-stars, who also get to be quite playful, include Ginger Rogers, Charles Coburn and, quite memorably, Marilyn Monroe.

It’s been an emotional week, and a memorable one, watching the various televised funerals, services, and other tributes to John McCain and Aretha Franklin. Today, there’s another service for John McCain, and the mourners in attendance – such as daughter Meghan McCain, whose tribute to her father, delivered just as I typed this, was as strong as it was tearful – are as noteworthy as those who are notable by their absence.

This new documentary series, in last week’s initial outing, left me spellbound. I couldn’t believe what I had seen – and in addition to the marvels of life found at the rim of a Galapagos Island volcano, or in the sea deep, deep beneath the island chain, there was the marvel of seeing young scientists traversing these most remote of areas with such commitment and enthusiasm. Watch for all of that, and more, in tonight’s second installment, “Secrets of the Deep.&rdqu
