Harkening back to pivotal gestation periods, conventional TV networks and latter day streamers have offered quite an education lately for those who want to enroll...

SERIES PREMIERE:  This new Amazon anthology series is based on the podcast by Aaron Mahnke, which recounts stories based on… other, older stories. Tonight’s premiere is “They Made a Tonic,” and stars Campbell Scott as a farmer who exhumes his daughter to find out if she’s really dead. Or, perhaps, undead.

SERIES PREMIERE:  David Fincher, who helped make Netflix’s reputation in the original drama series arena by directing the first few episodes and co-executive producing House of Cards, does the same thing here, returning to Netflix to helm the first few installments of Mindhunter. Created by Joe Penhall, Mindhunter is set in the late 1970s, and dramatizes the formation of the FBI’s profiler unit – and how two agents in particular, played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany

MOVIE PREMIERE:  Here’s another way Netflix is confusing things, and blurring the borders. This film, written and directed by Noah Baumbach, premieres today on Netflix – but also appears in a handful of selected movie theaters, ostensibly qualifying it for next year’s Oscar race. And it has a big-screen roster of stars, too: Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson.  But these days, those stars also have headlined TV dramas, so blurred lines are everywhere. SEASON PREMIERE: Last season’s finale was rough for Rebecca (Rachel Bloom), who was abandoned at the altar, and for viewers, who learned Rebecca once was institutionalized. (That justifies some of the odder musical fantasy numbers, at least.) So how does she pick herself up and dust herself off after that? She could come out swinging – but this is Rebecca, so expect her, instead, to come out singing.

This documentary series has seemed even more grim, if that were possible, now that the weight of the recent Las Vegas massacre has been added to the litany of mass shooting deaths. Tonight’s subject is from 2015, and is about the racially motivated shooting at Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina, which left nine black parishioners dead – and ignited a dialogue, about Confederate flags and other Civil War symbols and statues, that continues today.

Tonight is part two of Mike Judge’s clever  animated two-part study about country music’s one-time royal couple, George Jones and Tammy Wynette. She sang “Stand By Your Man” – then, for good reason, didn’t. And at one point, she sang for another high-profile couple, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, which pleased at least one of them.

If you think the last thing TV, America or the world needs is another panel show yelling about current events, you are a sane and rational person...
