One of my favorite movies of all time is televised by TCM tonight, unedited and uninterrupted. I have one word of advice for you: Plastics.

The month-long TCM salute to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy concludes tonight, including shorts during the day, and a prime-time showing of two of the pair’s films from 1940 – decades after they started making movies together in the silent era. A Chump at Oxford (pictured) begins the nightly salute at 8 p.m. ET, and another 1940 film, Saps at Sea, follows at 9:15 p.m. ET.

SPECIAL PREMIERE: Black Mirror, the modern Twilight Zone/Outer Limits anthology series created by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, are behind this new special, which is a comedy deconstruction disguised as a documentary, replete with lots of news footage from the year 2020 that seem more farcical than anything writers could dream up. There are more than a dozen writers contributing to this Death to 2020 special, and Brooker, Jones and company manage to make it amu

Which is good news, and why there’s a fresh episode of Shameless to watch on Showtime tonight. Well, a sort of fresh episode: It’s a new compilation of old scenes built around selected characters, as with tonight’s Shameless Hall of Fame: Ian & Mickey.

…And also on Showtime, tonight on Your Honor, it is a fresh episode… Episode 4, tracking the fate of the young man asked to take the fall, and the prison time, for the judge’s son.

Films about our two official world wars are competing for attention tonight in the exact same time slot. On Showtime, you can watch the breathtakingly photographed and meticulously planned WWI drama 1917, which tells of two soldiers who traverse dangerous front-line territory in order to deliver a crucial message to cancel a planned frontal assault. Filmed from a continuous, real-time, ostensibly single-camera perspective, 1917 is as immediate and visceral a viewing experienc

And here, on TCM at the same time, is one of the absolute classic films of all time, rightly paraded and saluted on the network as one of “The Essentials.” With Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman embroiled in a love story set against the stifling rise of the Nazis, this WWII drama is pitch-perfect. It’s also an amazing war movie, in that it was filmed and presented in 1942, in the early years of the very war it was depicting.
