Tonight, TCM is presenting 1951’s movie musical An American in Paris as one of “The Essentials,” and of course it is. Gene Kelly managed to make an even more perfect movie musical the following year with 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain – but the extended ballet that ends An American in Paris, taking Kelly and the audience on a panoramic tour through a piece of art history, is breathtakingly imaginative. Leslie Caron co-stars. And co-da

A documentary about Frank Zappa? How can it be anything but fascinating… and unusual? The leader of The Mothers of Invention, and a guy who named one of his solo albums Sheik Yerbouti and wrote on the jacket of a Mothers album, “The present-day composer refuses to die,” was as interesting when he wasn’t making music as when he was. So this new documentary film, released today on Movies on Demand, is one I’m really looking forward to.

Back in the day when flight attendants were stewardesses (women only, of course), there was this unspoken male fantasy that "stews" led exotic lives of forbidden pleasure...Fortunately, we've pretty much moved past that...

If you’re lucky enough to have some family around, safely, then you have two chances tonight, at 6 p.m. ET and again at 8:15 p.m. ET, to watch The Wizard of Oz on TBS tonight. And this year, more than any year since this classic movie musical was released in 1939, there’s no place like home. Because where else are you spending 98 percent of your time?

Starting in prime time tonight, TCM presents an all-night marathon of films by Alfred Hitchcock. A dozen films in a row, starting at 8 p.m. ET with 1954’s Rear Window and including, before the night is over, 1960’s Psycho, 1948’s Rope, and, at 12:15 a.m ET, 1963’s The Birds. There are no turkeys in that one – just a few lovebirds and a lot of crows – but wow.

This 2019 movie was directed by Sam Mendes, whose dazzling directorial style includes his breathtaking work on Broadway’s Cabaret revival and his dreamy approach to 1999’s American Beauty film. In 1917, he directs an action movie about WWI – but does it in such a way that, once you begin watching, you’ll never stop, because neither does his camera.

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. But because a lot of thirtysomething viewers, my daughter included, loved NBC’s original Saved By the Bell when they were young, I’m noting the existence, and unveiling, of this new Peacock sequel – which has some of the original cast members reprising their characters, now as adult authority figures instead of high-school buddies.
