SERIES PREMIERE: Andy Samberg, from Saturday Night Live, and Andre Braugher, from Men of a Certain Age and Homicide: Life on the Street, are such an unlikely pairing – especially on a prime-time broadcast network sitcom – that this new series deserves a look. And after a first look, it’ll earn a second, because this is a series concept, and a bunch of eccentrically drawn characters, that could grow on you quickly. And surprisingly, in this comic setting, Braugher, playing the p

SEASON PREMIERE: Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) ended Season 2 by running off into the sunset, still together, somehow. Season 3 begins at sunrise – or, at least, in a sunny climate, after the combustible duo heads impulsively for a vacation in Mexico.

SEASON PREMIERE: Season 3 begins with Mindy (Mindy Kaling) off in Haiti with her pastor boyfriend – but while she’s away, her medical residency in New York has been inherited by a new OB/GYN, played by guest star James Franco. Before the episode is over, they meet on her home turf, which he now feels is his.

Last week’s season premiere was peppered with unexplained shots of a uniformed boy sitting and brooding – until the end of the episode, when he unpacked an automatic weapon and headed into his school. Tonight’s episode deals with the immediate aftermath of that tragedy – and how it impacts the SAMCRO club, which turns out to have been the source for the illegally obtained firearm. Charlie Hunnam stars.

Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali collaborated on this 1928 short exercise in cinematic surrealism, which has images still capable of drawing gasps almost a century later. I know: I hear them every time I show this movie in my Rowan University film class.

You'd think there was only one show currently running on television, given all the space TVWW has devoted to Breaking Bad. But we just cannot recall another scripted series that has left us so electrified...

Fox’s new Sleepy Hollow is designed as a scary show, but has something to fear besides fear itself. By being this fall’s first new series to premiere, it’s inheriting TV’s Kickoff Curse…

SERIES PREMIERE: We plan to have our TVWW Fall Preview page available tomorrow, but Fox already is rolling out the season’s first new prime-time broadcast series. It’s a reworking of the Washington Irving story, bringing Ichabod Crane and his Headless Horseman adversary into the present day, to the confusion of all who encounter either of them. There are some playful moments that make this endurable, and Tom Mason and Nicole Beharie work well together, in a Moonlighting Lite sort of

Stephen Dorff stars in this 2012 movie, which I haven’t seen, but point out here specifically because its plot sounds so similar to Hostages, one of CBS’s new drama series premiering this month. Brake is about a Secret Service agent (Dorff), not a surgeon (Toni Collette in Hostages), but otherwise it’s the same basic idea: a well-connected protagonist is abducted and threatened with the death of loved ones unless they help with a presidential assassination plot.

SEASON FINALE: Could any TV actor in 2013 have a bigger two-night one-two punch than Dean Morris is enjoying right now? Last night, on AMC’s utterly brilliant Breaking Bad, Norris, as Hank, had an almost unwatchably intense showdown scene in the desert. And tonight, his surprise summer broadcast hit, Under the Dome, concludes Season 1 with more key scenes featuring Norris as power-hungry sheriff Big Jim. Tonight the dome goes dark, at least for a while, literally as well as figuratively &n
