On one side of the argument, all those doomsday movies about asteroids heading straight for Earth, doing to us what they have done to the dinosaurs. (The asteroid that exploded over Siberia could be Exhibit A in this regard.) On the other side, galactic miners who see in nearby asteroids a fortune in raw materials – iron, nickel, platinum and other precious finds. Check local listings.

Burt Lancaster month continues on TCM – and tonight, his movies include this 1961 courtroom thriller set in postwar Germany, about Nazis tried for war crimes in an international court. And Lancaster is only one of the major, major stars here. Others include Spencer Tracy, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell, Judy Garland and Montgomery Clift. Also featured: two faces that would become quite familiar in subsequent Sixties TV shows: William Shatner of Star Trek, and Werner Klemperer of Hogan

As we noted in our review of the documentary, JFK: One PM Central Standard Time, Walter Cronkite's breaking-live broadcast of the Kennedy assassination was significant for his rigorous delivery of what were confirmed facts, and just as rigorous reminders of what were not, even though they were thought to be reliable...

You knew this had to happen, and tonight it does. This TV series from the Marvel universe presents a plot that ties in to a current big-screen Marvel movie – specifically, Thor: The Dark World. That’s why tonight’s TV plot concerns a magical, dangerous artifact from Asgard, Thor’s home world. And given the pervasiveness of pop-culture synergy and cross-promotion, I guess there’s no reason to be Thor about it.

This 1941 John Huston film, based on the Dashiell Hammett novel, is one of the absolute classics of film noir. Humphrey Bogart stars, along with Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. TCM’s current documentary series import, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, recently made a brilliant connection between this movie and Chinatown – and not just that Huston wrote and directed Maltese Falcon and co-starred in the latter.

It’s a fun idea for a special: Put magician David Blaine up close and personal, as usual, to do his tricks, but this time with celebrities as the ones being thrown by his illusions. So you get Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad dropping their jaws in amazement. And Katy Perry. And Ricky Gervais, and many others. Of course, while you’re watching their reactions, you’re paying less careful attention to what Blaine is doing. It’s called misdirection, Hollywood sty
