SEASON PREMIERE: To begin its new season of Real Sports, Bryant Gumbel makes room for yet another impressively qualified correspondent: Soledad O’Brien, formerly of CNN (and, before that, NBC), whose initial report involves an Iraq War veteran who organized a “fight club” for fellow veterans, teaching martial arts while giving them a place to both vent and bond stateside.

Another entry in tonight’s TCM “Schoolgirl crushes” evening, this 1964 movie is one of the best ever made on the subject. It stars Peter Sellers as a concert pianist being followed by two giddy young girls (Tippy Walker and Merrie Spaeth) – but it’s the adult women, including Paula Prentiss and Angela Lansbury, who have most of the amorous fun here. This 1980 miniseries version of the Judith Krantz bestseller was produced at the height of the TV miniseries era, when no story was too long, no cast too diverse, and no production too bloated. Lindsay Wagner stars in this soap opera about the fashion and film industries, and her costars include Barry Bostwick, Marie-France Pisier, Robert Reed and Connie Stevens. It’s rarely televised, and only partly because of its length. (It occupies prime time tonight on Encore, and concludes tomorrow.

This 1977 movie made a movie star of John Travolta and musical superstars of the Bee Gees. Leading lady Karen Lynn Gorney, seen here as the woman no one sees in the photo with John Travolta, not so much.
