BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Various Networks, 2:40 a.m. ET

If you’re after live coverage of events, the best place for most of them is NBC’s Olympics website, which will be live streaming throughout. On TV, in addition to NBC’s regular broadcast coverage today, sister networks also offer things to watch. The network’s sister-operation sports arm, NBCSN, begins coverage at 2:40 a.m. ET, continues until 9 a.m. ET, and returns at 1:30 p.m. ET for coverage that continues unbroken until 2:40 a.m. ET Monday. The USA Network, from 7-9:30 a.m. ET today, has live coverage of women’s ice hockey, and it’s an interesting contest: It features the Canadian team vs. the athletes from Russia, who are competing as individuals even though their country has been banned from this year’s Olympic games.

NBC, 3:00 p.m. ET

On NBC today, Olympic coverage is available, because it’s Sunday, from 3-6 p.m. ET, then again from 7-11 p.m. ET and 11:35 p.m.-1 a.m. ET. If you’re looking for live coverage, there are two events in the prime-time 7-11 p.m. block: team event gold medal final in figure skating, and giant slalom competition in women’s alpine skiing.

Showtime, 8:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: When Donald Trump announced his intention to run as a presidential candidate in June 2015, Stephen Colbert was on hiatus, having concluded his Colbert Report at the end of the previous year, and three months away from the premiere of his Late Show on CBS. He said then that he regretted the timing, and was worried that the entire Trump candidacy would come and go before Colbert had a platform on which to have fun with it. The rest, of course, is history. Colbert not only has lampooned Trump ever since, but during Trump’s first year in office, even inaugurated an occasional cartoon short making fun of the President and his First Family. Now Showtime has taken that animated idea and turned it into a half-hour cartoon sitcom, the first two episodes of which premiere tonight. Jeff Bergman provides the voice of Trump, and there are caricatures of his cabinet and other politicians, as well as members of the TV medium. But as it starts out, Our Cartoon President is not laugh-out-loud funny. Even with Colbert as one of its creators and writers, the humor seems oddly muted. It’s fun to watch scenes in which Trump shares screen time with, say, First Lady Melania Trump, who seems to have more lines here than she does in real life, and with such cleverly caricatures politicians as Mitch McConnell. But the sharpest humor is aimed at the media, with Fox News’ Fox & Friends targeted in the first episode, and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show in the second. When the focus shifts to the White House, the humor can’t seem to be current enough, much less outrageous enough. The premiere is about the buildup to Trump’s first State of the Union speech, where, in real life, the President out-absurded Our Cartoon President by accusing unenthusiastic Democratic audience members of treason for lack of applause. And in the first two episodes, nothing is as memorable, or arguably as caustic, as inserted actual footage from the real Trump’s campaign. This cartoon show is worth sampling, but it’s yet to find its footing. The biggest laughs come at the very end, when Our Cartoon President plays its theme song (the lyrics of which, almost in their entirety, are an almost mockingly repetitive “Donald Trump is the President”), and when the closing credits note that the program is a production of CBS Broadcasting Inc., and that it “participated in the New York State Governor’s Office of Motion Picture & Television Development’s Post Production Credit Program.” Which means that, in producing this program, Colbert and company benefited from a state tax rebate. Our government dollars at work… For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.

Starz!, 8:00 p.m. ET

The characters from this show’s alternate dimensions have begun to meet one another. It started with J.K. Simmons’ meek government worker coming face to face with his deadly counterpart from the other place. More recently, an assassin from that same other dimension crossed to this world and was arrested after her double here, a virtuoso violinist, was murdered. And last week, that assassin met both of Simmons’ doppelgängers, and much preferred the meeker version. This week, the wife of Simmons’ secret agent from the other dimension (played by Olivia Williams, pictured) continues to show up in this world, where her counterpart remains in a coma. Oh, well, at least it's easy to tell them apart.

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Tonight’s prime-time lineup in TCM’s month-long “31 Days of Oscar” schedule salutes some Best Director winners – starting with 1940’s The Grapes of Wrath, an adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel that won that honor for director John Ford. Ford won on three other occasions, making him the most honored director in Academy Award history. In Grapes of Wrath, Henry Fonda stars, in the break-your-heart role of Depression-era everyman Tom Joad.

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

In tonight’s episode, “The King Over the Water,” Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman) travels with her court, and with her husband Prince Albert, to the Scottish highlands – where the two of them have a great time evading their entourage and enjoying the privacy as well as the scenery. Check local listings.

HBO, 9:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This 10-episode drama series comes from Alan Ball, of both American Beauty and True Blood fame, but despite an exciting cast, Here and Now starts off a lot less enjoyable than either of those. Tim Robbins stars as Greg Boatwright, an academic and once-acclaimed author going through all the motions of a midlife crisis – but at the overdue age of 60. His wife, played by Holly Hunter, is an undiluted, undeterred liberal, and they have combined to raise a family, mostly through adoption, that is almost aggressively multiracial and multicultural. But there’s very little fun, insight or even credibility here, and the underlying mystery about the meaning of a numerical message or code doesn’t add up to much – not even in code. Robbins and Hunter are two of my favorite actors, and most of Ball’s work has pleased me greatly, but Here and Now isn’t even that entertaining here and there. But the sex scene with one of the couple’s children losing her virginity while wearing a horse-head mask – well, that’s a first, for sure. For full reviews, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Showtime, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The last two seasons of Homeland have been tough. They’ve been set in interesting cities, and had interesting antagonists, but the focus has been less on Claire Danes as bipolar world-saver Carrie than on her even more unstable counterpart, Quinn – whose fate, last season, wasn’t worse than death. It was death. But before that, the two of them managed to work together to save a presidential candidate – incoming President Elizabeth Keane (played by Elizabeth Marvel), who instantly betrayed Carrie by ordering the arrests of several people, including this show’s most reliable and stable hero, Saul (Mandy Patinkin). So now, Carrie has a friend to save and a president to oppose – and, as this season quickly unfurls, some even bigger fish to fry and mysteries to unravel. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

CBS All Access, 9:30 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: The first season of the biggest draw on the CBS Access streaming site comes to an end tonight, with a cliffhanger designed to get people talking. But how many, because who’s watching? And when? Time will tell – and pretty quickly, too.
