MARVEL'S JESSICA JONES
June 14, 2019  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: This is the third and final season for Jessica Jones, which was, and remains, the best Marvel TV series based on one of the comic giant’s characters. The first season had Jessica (Krysten Ritter), a private detective imbued with supernatural strength and agility, battling two demons: her alcoholism, and the mind-controlling bad guy who captured and manipulated her as his unwilling plaything before she escaped and vowed revenge. David Tennant played that villain, and was a superb antagonist for the equally strong Ritter. Season 2 had her chasing down another villain, but this time it was her own mother (played by another impressive guest star, Janet McTeer).  And this new season, the show’s last, has Jessica up against another Big Bad – this time a serial killer who ends up targeting Jessica herself. This final season is as strong as the rest, and Jessica Jones goes out as it came in, as the best TV Marvel series ever made. Oh, and compared to such cinematic Marvel entries as Dark Phoenix, it’s better than many of the company’s movies, too. But Netflix and Marvel are parting company now that Marvel-owned Disney is preparing its own streaming service, so this is the last lap for Jessica and company (that company includes Rachael Taylor, playing Trish Walker, Jessica’s closest confidante – but not so close this year.) And as with any final seasons, almost anything can happen, so prepare yourself. Not every familiar character should be expected to survive. Or will…
