MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000
November 22, 2018  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: The long-running cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has always had a strong connection with Thanksgiving – or, at least, turkeys, especially of the cinematic variety. In fact, today, Thanksgiving Day, marks 30 years since MST3K launched as a low-rent local offering on KTMA-TV in Minneapolis. On the subsequent national level, if you’re keeping track, this is Season 12 for the antics of the villains from outer space torturing other interstellar travelers by forcing them to watch bad movies, and record their reactions – which, for both the human experiment victim and his robot sidekicks, lean heavily towards well-timed wisecracks. Six new episodes, which means six bad movies accompanied by snarky interjections, premiere today on Netflix, in what is Season 2 of this streaming service’s reboot. Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt return as the new villains – and the films, this time around, include the horrifyingly awful Mac and Me, a movie that prominently incorporates product placement of food items, locations and TV ad characters from McDonald’s. Other turkeys being carved up today include Killer Fish and Atlantic Rim.
