This 1931 movie is an early classic in the gangster genre. It premiered less than five years after Hollywood released its first full-length sound film, and benefited greatly not only from the sounds of screeching car tires and rat-a-tatting machine guns, but from the tough-guy sneering tones of Edward G. Robinson, who plays rising mobster Rico.
