THE POST
October 27, 2018  | By David Bianculli

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 2017 Steven Spielberg movie, about the publication of what came to be known as the Pentagon Papers, somewhat underplays the importance of The New York Times in breaking the story initially – but in focusing on The Washington Post, it does provide what amounts as a fitting prequel to the equally brave journalistic story told in 1976’s All the President’s Men. And it also gives Tom Hanks the chance to play Post editor Ben Bradlee, a role played so well in that earlier film by Jason Robards. Post publisher Kay Graham was discussed but not portrayed in the Watergate movie – but here, she’s played, with memorable determination, by Meryl Streep.
