MY DINNER WITH HERVE
October 20, 2018  | By David Bianculli

HBO, 8:00 p.m. ET

MOVIE PREMIERE: The basic description of this new HBO telemovie makes it sound like a comic tossaway: a journalist interviews the former Fantasy Island co-star, Herve Villechaize, about a decade after the actor had been dismissed from that show for demanding a pay raise for playing Tattoo (“De plane! De plane!”). But My Dinner with Herve is neither comic nor a tossaway. Based on actual interviews conducted by reporter Sacha Gervasi in 1993, this drama stars Jamie Dornan of Fifty Shades of Grey as Gervasi, and Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage as Villechaize. After writing the screenplay for The Terminal, Gervasi wrote a script about his Villechaize encounter, and got Dinklage to agree to star about 15 years ago. But no one would make the film, until Dinklage’s stardom rose to Throne heights. So here, on HBO, it is… finally. For a full review, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.
