SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE HEARING
September 27, 2018  | By David Bianculli

Various Networks, 10:00 a.m. ET

The Circus, the Showtime political documentary that captures newsgathering and politicians on the fly, presents a new installment this Sunday – and makes room for one of the more recent accusers of Brett Kavanaugh, whom President Trump has nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the real political circus is televised live this morning, beginning at 10 a.m. ET, when testimony about his alleged sexual assault on Christine Blasey Ford is heard, with both Kavanaugh and Ford telling their sides of the story. There has been no reopening of the FBI investigation, which must be ordered by the President, so for today, it’s a “he said-she said” exercise, with some unusual rules: senators on the Democratic side of the committee are limited to one round of questions at five minutes each, while Republicans are deferring their questioning time to a female prosecutor hired for the occasion. The optics of this hearing will be powerful, and perhaps have quite an impact – but not nearly so much as the statements and responses by Kavanaugh and Ford. Watch for it on every news channel, and major broadcast network, and a few other places as well.
