THE HISTORY OF COMEDY: "GONE TOO SOON"
August 5, 2018  | By David Bianculli  | 5 comments

CNN, 10:00 p.m. ET

This new CNN History of Comedy installment is called Gone Too Soon, and talks about the comedians who died young enough to have fans wondering what they might have said and done in the years and decades to come. Surely, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams will be part of this hour – as will one late comic, already announced as part of the program, the lesser-known Mitch Hedberg (pictured), whose memorable one-liners included: “Rice is great if you’re really hungry and want to eat 2000 of something.”

I just realized no Andy Kaufman either. They certainly had the time to mention all the omissions on this list (Pryor, Bruce, Kinison, Kaufman) but instead they chose to also include a segment about living comedians who “retired” from stand-up, like Eddie Murphy and Larry David. No offense to those guys, but they should not have done that.

Another glaring omission I think was Sam Kinison. He was a rock star and is certainly more noteworthy than some, if not most, of the mentions on that show. So strange.

I enjoyed Gone Too Soon History of Comedy. However, how could you omit Richard Pryor???? He would be on the Mount Rushmore of stand-up comedians. How dare you skip him!!!!

And yet neither Lenny Bruce nor Richard Pryor was mentioned at all. Very curious.

Not only did they fail to mention Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor in a show about dead comedians, but they also managed to find time for a segment about comedians who are still alive.. (but quit stand-up to do movies)
Fake news?
