2018 FIFA WORLD CUP
July 1, 2018  | By David Bianculli

Fox, 10:00 a.m. ET

We’re only one day into the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup, and already the mighty have fallen, big time. First of all, defending champion Germany didn’t even make it to the Round of 16. And yesterday, in the first two games in that knockout round, the contests ended with this Cup’s two lauded superstars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, eliminated along with their respective teams, Portugal and Argentina. France beat Argentina yesterday 4-3 in a thrilling duel, while Uruguay managed to handle Portugal throughout and win, 2-1. France and Uruguay advance to the quarterfinals, and today’s four teams try to do the same. Both contests are televised on Fox, beginning at 10 a.m. ET with the host nation, Russia, facing Spain. Then, at 2 p.m. ET, it’s Croatia vs. Denmark. Yesterday’s games were thrilling, and given home-country fervor, the Russian game, at least, ought to be no less intense.
