THE BEGUILED

In 1971, Clint Eastwood starred in an unusual period movie, directed by Don Siegel, called The Beguiled, in which he played a wounded Union soldier imprisoned behind enemy lines in a Confederate women’s boarding school. He tries to survive, and escape, by charming the women (including Geraldine Page and Elizabeth Hartman) individually and pitting them against each other — but with unexpected results. In this 2017 film, director Sofia Coppola mounted a moody and interesting remake, starring Colin Farrell as the soldier and Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning as some of the women.
