1999: Final 'Late Late Show with Tom Snyder'
March 26, 2021  | By TV WW  | 7 comments

This day in 1995 marked Tom Snyder's final appearance on CBS's post-Late Show talk show, The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder.

Snyder was replaced by Craig Kilborn. Craig Ferguson took over in 2005, left in December of 2014 and was replaced in March 2015 by James Corden.

Prior to hosting The Late Late Show, Snyder helmed the post-Tonight Show program, Tomorrow, on NBC, until the show was cancelled in 1982 to make room for Late Night with David Letterman. When Letterman moved to CBS, he was given control of the time-slot following Late Show. His Worldwide Pants Inc. created The Late Late Show, and tapped Snyder, whom Letterman had long admired, to host.

Small on-screen doses would be best for all concerned but Tuesday's episode instead heaps on their scenes together.

Tom on CBS was a shell of what he did on NBC's Tomorrow and while Dan Ackroyd perfected Tom's laugh for SNL,Tom was a smart guy who just got too fixated on celebrities after doing important early work in Vietnam. He wound up on ABC Radio like Larry King had done for Mutual which worked better but few remember him on CBS.

Tom Snyder got me through Watergate as a 20 year old
wondering what in the world was happening to our country.
His interviews were wonderful. My two favorite interviews were
Harlan Ellison and Sterling Hayden, classics!!

Oops, this needs to be updated. Former host Ferguson left the building in December, and current host James Corden started his version of LLS a handful of minutes ago.
