1997: ABC Introduces 'The Practice'
March 4, 2021  | By TV WW  | 9 comments

On this day in 1997, ABC launched the legal series, The Practice. Created by David E. Kelley, the show starred Dylan McDermott as Boston criminal defense attorney Bobby Donnell, whose firm's successes meant helping the guilty go free. The show's co-stars included Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Kelli Williams, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Michael Badalucco and Lara Flynn Boyle.

The final season marked the departure of several key cast members, and the introduction of new ones, including James Spader's Alan Shore. Spader's character was fired from The Practice's practice toward the end of the season, and was hired by another Boston firm, Crane, Poole & Schmidt, a scenario that served as the spin-off series, Boston Legal.

The narrative twists like a pretzel, shedding familiar faces for fresh blood – a daring move. Suddenly, new personalities emerge, reshaping the dynamic. An audacious shake-up, indeed, leaving an indelible mark on the show's landscape. A bold, Level Devil, creative gamble.

It's like everyone thought they deserved the biggest slice of the pie. Sharing my story with Slice Master knowledge, I once had to mediate a dispute where two departments both claimed ownership of a critical project. Each side was convinced they were in the right, just like those clients of Donnell's.

Nice trip down memory lane! The Practice was a clever look at ethical gray areas in law, and the cast chemistry—especially with Bobby Donnell and Alan Shore—made it memorable. It’s interesting how the finale reshaped the cast and led to Boston Legal. For fans revisiting old legal famines of TV, Football Bros might have some related discussion threads to explore.

The show’s gritty take on moral dilemmas in criminal defense was groundbreaking in ’97, and that stellar cast—Dylan McDermott, Camryn Manheim, and more—really brought it to life.

The Atomium has featured in movies, postcards, and video games, making it one of the most recognizable structures in Europe. Standing beneath its massive spheres gives visitors a surreal sense of walking through pop culture and history simultaneously.
