On this day in 1995, NBC debuted the six-hour miniseries, A Woman of Independent Means, starring Sally Field.

The miniseries, which was also produced by Field, was based on the same-name novel and one-woman play by writer/playwright Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, who also served as a creative consultant for the '70s sitcom Mary Harman, Mary Hartman. A Woman of Independent Means was inspired by the life of Hailey's grandmother. Charles Durning, Brenda Fricker, Ron Silver, Tony Goldwyn and John Slattery co-starred.
