1989: Jane Pauley's Final Day on 'Today'
December 29, 2020  | By TV WW  | 2 comments

This day in 1989 marked Jane Pauley's final day with NBC's Today. Pauley began her stint with the NBC morning show in 1976, co-hosting first with Tom Brokaw, then with Bryant Gumbel.

Following her resignation from Today, Pauley hosted the newsmagazine Real Life with Jane Pauley, and contributed to NBC Nightly News. In 1992, she began co-hosting Dateline NBC with Stone Phillips, and stayed with the newsmag until 2003. In 2004, she helmed the syndicated talk show The Jane Pauley Show, which ran one season.

I recall it happening so well. A Woman who had grown into a Respected journalist, by insisting on real interviews, not just the fluff... was designated 'OLD' and a
young blonde Deborah Norville stepped in. Painful TV. If I recall properly Norville received unjustified Blowback because of it, never sustained the career she was due.to have. Jane ended it by broadcasting giving Norville her alarm clock...
Tongue in cheek support.

I liked Jane on Today and yet she has slowly become everything wrong with a respected CBS Sunday Morning series including all the absences. She has made it even more pop culture oriented than it was with Mr.Osgood. Not sure why she took the job because she needs neither the $$$ or is bored with her husband,Garry Trudeau. But,Jane is winding down a media career in a bad way kind of like Bryant G. did at CBS This Morning.
