1984: CBS Presents 'A Christmas Carol'
December 17, 2020  | By TV WW  | 12 comments

On this day in 1984, CBS presented an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, starring George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge.

Considered by many — including TVWW's David Bianculli — to be one of the best modern versions of the 1843 holiday novella, the telefilm featured a primarily British cast including David Warner and Susannah York as Bob and Mrs. Cratchit.

This adaptation strikes the perfect balance between darkness and hope. David Warner and Susannah York were also brilliant as the Cratchits!

This adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" with George C. Scott is definitely one of the best TV films of all time. I remember watching it for the first time on our national TV - his interpretation of Scrooge brings the perfect balance between hardness and later vulnerability of the character. The British cast further enhances the authenticity, especially David Warner as Bob Cratchit.

This version is considered one of the best modern versions of Dickens' classic, it truly captures the spirit of the original story while adding its own unique twist.
