1988: CBS Debuts 'Murphy Brown'
November 14, 2020  | By TV WW  | 7 comments

On this day in 1998, CBS introduced Murphy Brown. The sitcom, starring Candice Bergen, revolved around a cynical journalist and news anchor for a fictional network newsmagazine called FYI.

Bergen's co-stars included Charles Kimbrough, Joe Regalbuto and Faith Ford as the newsmag's on-air talent, Grant Shaud as the show's wunderkind producer, Pat Corley as owner of the bar and grill the FYI team frequented, and Robert Pastorelli as Murphy's housepainter, who never finished working on her Georgetown townhouse.

The series played an unexpected role in the 1992 presidential election when, during a campaign speech, then-vice president Dan Quayle criticized the then-pregnant, not-married fictional character for "ignoring the importance of fathers by birthing a child alone." The comment sparked a national debate, and the series capitalized on the attention by allowing its characters to react to Quayle's remarks in the show's 1992-1993 season premiere.

In September of 2018, Murphy Brown returned to the news business as Murphy Brown returned to broadcast television.

NYT Wordle is a popular online word puzzle game. In the game, players try to guess a five-letter word within six attempts. After each guess, the letters in the guessed word are color-coded to provide feedback. Wordle Nyt is an enhanced version of the classic game that was featured in The New York Times Wordle.

To play Nyt Wordle effectively, there are a few things you should know. First and foremost, your initial guess matters significantly. With only six attempts allowed, making an educated first choice can set you up for success or failure. Pay attention to patterns in common words while keeping letter frequency in mind. Speaking of letter frequency, sorting words based on their occurrence rate can be an effective strategy for tackling the game. Start by guessing words with high-frequency letters like E or T since they are more likely to appear in English words.

The show was often political and satiric, and its humor was often based on the absurdities of news reporting.

Murphy Brown (Candice Bergen), an alcoholic in recovery, makes her initial appearance in the first episode of the show at the fictional news publication FYI following a spell at the Betty Ford Clinic inpatient facility. She has a razor-sharp tongue and is over 40 and single. She is regarded as one of the professionals that shattered many of the barriers she ran into in her career. She is portrayed as one of America's harshest media figures, if not the warmest or most compassionate, dominating news magazine FYI.
