1972: TV's First Premium Channel, HBO, Debuts
November 8, 2020  | By TV WW

On this day in 1972, television's first premium cable channel, Home Box Office, aka HBO, made its debut. The first film to run on pay cable service was Sometimes a Great Notion, an Oscar-nominated adaptation of the second novel by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest author Ken Kesey starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda.

The movie was followed by the live transmission of a NHL hockey game from Madison Square Garden between the New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks.
It's always the same crap year in and year out.  I'm sick of it.  The Orioles are broke!  The Orioles are broke!  Such BS.  This team ranks 7th in all of baseball in franchise value at 1.1 billion.  Angelos has so much money he could buy several states.  Stop with the crap....please, just stop.  Call it for what it is......Angelos is CHEAP and Showalter and Dum Duquette are nothing more than his puppets.  No more.  Can't go out and make a splash at the expense of losing Weiters and others?????  Give me a break.  The Orioles are worth nearly 300 million more than the Nats and they spend money.  Stop with the BS.  Assuming here that O's fans are idiots?  Apparently. - See more at: http://discussions.baltimoresun.com/20/balnews/bs-sp-schmuck-column-1103-20131102/10#sthash.mK9k3hWj.dpuf

By the 90s, HBO's premium status was well-established, and its own productions were at least as noteworthy as the theatrical films that it was known for at its incepton. In 1996, it started using the slogan, "It's Not TV, It's HBO." With the Sopranos, starting in 1999, its reputation was solidified.
