2007: Cable's Sci Fi Reimagines 'The Wizard of Oz'
December 2, 2014  | By Christy Slewinski

On this day in 2007, cable's Sci Fi channel (before it became SyFy) introduced a reimagined version of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The four-and-a-half hour miniseries, which ran in three parts on consecutive nights, starred not-yet New Girl Zooey Deschanel as a Kansas waitress who travels to an alternate world called the O.Z. (Outer Zone). There she meets a unique group of friends — portrayed by actors Alan Cumming, Neal McDonough and Taoul Trujillo — modeled after Baum's scarecrow, tin man and lion, respectively. With the help of her friends and The Mystic Man, played by Richard Dreyfuss, DG faces the sorceress Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson) who is, in fact, her enchanted sister.
