This isn’t the NBC version of the workplace mockumentary series. It’s the original British version, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and starring Gervais as the unforgettably awkward and self-deluded office manager David Brent. In England, this series was over after 12 episodes and one holiday special – but that baker’s dozen of installments, televised overseas from 2001-03 and imported by BBC America, remains one of the best comedies of the new century. Whether or not you’re a fan of the Americanized version, you should love this one. It’s got more laughs, better performances – and, at the end, more heart and soul. – DB.
