THE ERNIE KOVACS COLLECTION, VOLUMES 1 & 2
October 26, 2012  | By David Bianculli

Ernie Kovacs, in the 1950s and until his untimely death in 1962, was a television triple threat: an unusually naturalistic and charming host, an outrageously goofy character comic, and a TV pioneer who pushed the medium in several directions at once, both technically and artistically. The first volume collects his most classic surviving work, including his silent Eugene special, his early music videos and the Nairobi Trio, and the recently released Volume 2adds to the mix, including such welcome rarities as his only surviving TV interview. For fans of TV history, of Ernie, and especially of Rancid the Devil Horse, these two sets are vintage gems. – DB
