Super Ad
January 29, 2014  | By Eric Gould

It’s Super Bowl time and, of course, time for the annual run of high-end commercials debuting during the game. Usually the best commercials mean the funniest, but not so last year when Ram Trucks rolled out the “Farmer” commercial which used the voiceover of late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey. Harvey’s conservatively branded “The Rest of the Story” segments were widely syndicated across American radio for almost 40 years and were well known for Harvey’s signature long pauses that usually set up the punch line of the story he was reading. The tape of Harvey was taken from his “So God Made a Farmer” speech given to the Future Farmers of America in 1978 and was arresting for its reverberant echo, Harvey’s preacher-like delivery and the stunning still photography that accompanied the two-minute long audio. It wasn’t your usual Super Bowl fluff -- and delightfully so. –EG
