Send in the (Old) Clowns
October 29, 2017  | By Eric Gould  | 6 comments

As part of our continuing celebration of Too Funny to Fail, the new Hulu documentary about the rise and flop of the Dana Carvey Show in 1996 (David reviews it here,) now comes the recurring gag “Grandma the Clown” – more primetime anti-comedy from the writing team headed by Louis C.K. and and Robert Smigel. (Smigel is renown for the Triumph the Insult Comic Dog act.) “It doesn’t get easier, children…” Honk, honk.

Wow, "Grandma the Clown" sounds truly bizarre! I can see why it was considered "too funny to fail." It reminds me of some of the absurdist humor that just doesn't quite land. If you're looking for something equally strange but maybe a bit more addictive, you might want to check out Slope Game online. It's weirdly compelling in a completely different way! I think it's the simple, impossible task and the visuals that keep you hooked, not the humor.

Grandma the Clown's awkward humor reminds me of the unsettling animatronics in Fnaf. Both deliver comedy that's intentionally off-putting. This bit from the Dana Carvey Show, much like surviving a night shift in Fnaf, tests your patience. The writers clearly aimed for discomfort, making "Grandma" a fascinating case study in anti-comedy. Were they trying to jumpscare us with laughter?

I'm very afraid of clowns because the way they wear makeup looks very strange and scary.
