DEADWOOD: THE COMPLETE SERIES
July 30, 2012  | By David Bianculli

Unfortunately, The Complete Series of HBO’s Deadwood is only three seasons long, because the network and series creator David Milch stopped production of the brilliant Western after only two years (2004-06). Fortunately, those three seasons gave us one of the best-written, best-performed dramas in TV history, and at least one iconic character: the foul-mouthed, sour-souled, yet somehow charismatic Al Swearengen, played flawlessly and fearlessly by Ian McShane. But Timothy Olyphant shone here, too, as well, as did so many other fine actors (from Brad Dourif and Molly Parker to Garret Dillahunt and Kristen Bell) that no matter which of them Milch followed, you were happy and privileged to go along for the ride. The two-season DVD boxed set is available HERE – but this is one series that really benefits from the crisper clarity of Blu-Ray, which is available HERE. —DB
