DVD DEAL: Boris Karloff's 'Thriller'
October 17, 2010  | By Diane Werts

Thriller_DVD_Karloff.jpgSpoooooky good DVD on sale at Amazon this Sunday -- Boris Karloff's Thriller: The Complete Series, down to $56 from a previous price around $100 and a list price of $150.

That's for 67 remastered black-and-white episodes on 14 discs, where horror king Karloff hosts circa '60 guest stars like John Carradine, Leslie Nielsen, Robert Vaughn, Elizabeth Montgomery, Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman, Rip Torn, (the inevitable) William Shatner, and Karloff himself.

The boxed anthology boasts a surprisingly deep list of extras, including 27 audio commentaries from the likes of vintage director Arthur Hiller, contemporary filmmaker Ernest Dickerson, actors Patricia Barry and Richard Anderson, film music maven Jon Burlingame, horror historians, and many others.

Add isolated music tracks, vintage promos and still galleries, and Thriller is one sharp set for a show that has long topped TV fans' wish lists.

You know you need to see "Pigeons from Hell"!

But this DVD can't be half as fun as the chopped-up reruns that the (formerly) Sci Fi Channel aired a while back. I may not recognize any of these with their teasers intact and the end-of-act cobwebs restored.

Seriously, very cool. You're aware that John (One Step Beyond) Newland directed "Pigeons"? I still can't believe it, but it's true. (Though it does explain the slow pace.)
