"Who" Cares? I Do: Missing Craig Ferguson "Doctor Who" Musical Number Finally Surfaces
December 1, 2010  | By David Bianculli

In previous recent posts, we detailed the last-minute pulling of a musical cold open for a Doctor Who-themed installment of CBS's The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and how angry he was to have rehearsed the production number for two days, and written special lyrics to the instrumental Doctor Who theme, only to have CBS yank the bit because music rights hadn't been secured. (The original posts can be read HERE and HERE.)

We hoped then the cold open would show up somewhere on the Internet, and it has -- though for how long, given the legal questions, I'm not certain. So dive in quickly, just in case, and enjoy Ferguson's goofy yet knowing take on the nearly 50-year-old sci-fi TV phenomenon...

Watch Wavy the alligator puppet sing, "The doctor doesn't die, he just regenerates"!

Watch Ferguson sing about the show's ongoing message, which, in his view, shows the triumph of "intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism"!

All that, and beautiful dancing girls, and a lot more!...

Click on the embedded YouTube video link at the top of this column to enjoy, at last, a delightful Scottish perspective on an equally delightful British TV institution...

Thanks for posting this samizdat. I think this narrowly edges out "Look out there's a monster coming" for best opening sequence ever (on the occasion of Geoff's intro to the show). And if you haven't seen that one, check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwkK5-ibYcw and judge for yourself, but make sure you have a few hours to burn if you start checking out other Bonzo Dog videos.

Craig Ferguson keeping me up late is the number one cause of afternoon naps in my office.

Fantastic! Sometimes I really do love Craig!

Oh, and of course you mean REgenerates, right Otherwise it would be a very different show.

[Made me laugh out loud. You're right, of course -- and I'll correct. -- David B.]

Loved it! Thanks so much for posting. BTW, the alligator says "regenerates" rather than "degenerates." I wish they'd just put out a DVD of the production numbers: I can't get rid of at least 2 shows on my DVR because they have "Look out there's a monster coming" and "Monster Mash" from earlier Ferguson shows. And I loved that even Secretariat was in this one (on the second viewing I noticed him dancing around in the background as well as the brief appearance earlier).

David I am shocked. Wavy does not say "...he just degenerates!" he says REgenerates. This is crucial knowledge for any Dr. Who fan. Whovians know that what makes the Doctor great is that he can regenerate and offer another great young actor the chance of a lifetime.

[See my laughing comment below. Freudian typing, I guess. You know, where you say one thing but mean your mother... -- David B.]
