MAKING A MURDERER
December 18, 2015  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Following in the true-life, exhaustively detailed criminal investigations of the American Life podcast Serial, and of HBO’s Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, this new 10-part Netflix documentary, streaming in its entirety, today, tells the story of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man imprisoned for rape and other crimes for 18 years, then exonerated by DNA evidence. And when he prepares to file suit for his wrongful incarneration, it’s not long before he’s charged in another crime – murder this time. One question is: Is Avery innocent again? Another question is: Without the serial, weekly format that worked for Serial and Jinx, will viewers binge through what amounts to a 10-hour true crime story?
