THE GRINDER
March 1, 2016  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

Fox, 9:30 p.m. ET

This sitcom hasn’t caught on yet the way it should have, but every episode establishes more firmly that this show knows exactly what sort of meta tone it wants to project. Rob Lowe and Fred Savage work fabulously together, and the writers have made room for stronger and larger contributions from both the supporting cast and the guest stars. Timothy Olyphant, as himself, is especially funny and playful. Considering that his last two notable TV roles were as the star of Deadwood and Justified, Olyphant has pulled off a troika of excellent performances in excellent shows that very few actors ever get to experience.

The Grinder is a bit less funny than advertised but Rob Lowe can waltz in almost anything and it is worth watching.Still, his character has been limited by family subplots of late when there should have been much more outside the usual sitcom formulas possibilites. Maybe next season?
