NATIONAL THEATRE AT HOME: "THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III"
June 11, 2020  | By David Bianculli  | 2 comments

National Theatre at Home, 2:00 p.m. ET

LIMITED PREMIERE: The latest one-week streaming premiere from National Theatre at Home is the first production recorded from a staging outside of London. Working with another British performing troupe, the Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, today London’s National Theatre presents its latest At Home fundraising special, available on its website and YouTube channel for the next seven days. It’s a telecast of the stage version of the 2018 production of Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III, starring Mark Gatiss as the powerful ruler whose public behavior and proclamations became increasingly erratic, and the people around him uncertain about how to react, as his mind continued to unravel. (Insert your own modern allegory here.) Gatiss co-created Sherlock with Steven Moffat, and co-starred in that same fabulous series, playing the detective’s brother, Mycroft. He also, among other credits, appeared as Tycho Nestoris in Game of Thrones, and various characters in both Doctor Who (for which he wrote several scripts as well) and The League of Gentlemen TV series. But for the next seven days, he’s King George. And by George, I think he's got it...
