ROUTE 66 MARATHON
March 7, 2021  | By David Bianculli  | 9 comments

Decades, 12:00 a.m. ET

Sorry if I worried any of you yesterday by not posting Bets for Saturday. Couldn’t do it. Day after vaccine shot #2. All I’ll say is, THAT is a side effect?! And THAT?! But I’m back, and the thing I was most excited about pointing out yesterday is repeated today anyway. It’s the Decades weekend marathon of episodes of Route 66, the 1960-64 drama series created by Naked City producer Stirling Silliphant, who wrote most of the episodes. Martin Milner and George Maharis star as guys who take to the open road in a 1961 Corvette, riding along the Chicago-to-L.A. Route 66 highway, and elsewhere. Eventually, the series filmed on location in 40 states, and those directors included Robert Altman and Sam Peckinpah.

Route 66 is a total classic, but honestly, I spent the whole weekend playing games on https://cookieclicker-unblocked.org instead of watching TV. Altman directing episodes is a massive flex though.

The amount of travel in that show is insane for the time. Hard to believe they actually filmed in 40 different states.

Those location shoots in 40 different states really make modern shows look cheap. It’s wild that Altman and Peckinpah were involved in a series like this.

The Corvette and those on-location shoots still hold up better than most modern dramas.

Route 66 is top tier. Honestly just watching it for the on-location shooting alone is worth the time.

Route 66 is a classic, but people always forget Altman directed a few of those episodes. Definitely worth a watch just for the location shooting.

The Corvette footage in those early seasons still holds up way better than most stuff on TV today. Glad you're feeling better after the vaccine, that second shot really hits hard.

The most telling signs an employee isn't working out include ongoing incompetence, reticence to ask questions when stuck and passing tasks off to coworkers frequently.
