THE VOICE
December 17, 2019  | By David Bianculli

NBC, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: My theory about reality TV competition shows is based on my own practice, and experience, with them. The ones I like, and watch, are ones where the talent is showcased cleverly and vividly – but after a few seasons, the repetition of the format eventually leads me to move on. This didn’t happen to me with The Voice until last season, when the spotlight-grabbing impulses of that year’s batch of celebrity judges finally wore me down, and wore me out. But I decided, last night, to return to this latest cycle of The Voice for the first time, where I got to watch, and enjoy, the finalists run through their paces. Tonight’s finale will be top-heavy with guest performances from other spotlight-seeking artists – but you’ll at least see highlights of the finalists, and the smiles of the one eventual winner. On a TV night when there’s almost nothing else on, why not sneak in near the finish line and watch this last episode of 2019?
