2014 WIMBLEDON WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
July 5, 2014  | By David Bianculli

ESPN, 9:00 a.m. ET

Today’s live telecast of the 2014 women’s final at Wimbledon is presented on ESPN, because ABC has cleared its decks to prevent any possibility of a clash with its coverage of today’s World Cup quarterfinal between Argentina and Belgium, which begins at 11:30 a.m. ET. As for today’s women’s tennis final, it could be looked at in terms of countries as well: It’s the Czech Republic vs. Canada, represented by two young players personifying the new guard of women’s tennis. Czech player Petra Kvitova, 24, won the Wimbledon title three years ago by beating Maria Sharapova, but this is the first Grand Slam final she’s reached since. And Kvitova’s opponent this year is Eugenie Bouchard, 20, the first Canadian to appear in a major tournament singles final – and a young woman making her first-ever appearance at a Grand Slam final. With both Sharapova and Serena Williams dispatched by others in earlier rounds, the next-generation athletes take center stage – and Centre Court.
