What Steven Spielberg lost in converting this stage play to this 2011 movie was its overt symbolism, and the beauty of the onstage “puppet” that symbolized the titular animal. What he gained, though, was a majestic creature with spirit to spare, and a brilliantly photographed film about a horse and his trainer, and their separate grim journeys through World War I. Jeremy Irvine stars as the trainer – but watch for Peter Mullan as Ted Narracott, who figures prominently in War Horse. He also figures prominently in Top of the Lake, the current Sundance Channel miniseries, playing gruff old Matt Mitcham.
