THE TOM AND JERRY SHOW
April 9, 2014  | By David Bianculli

Cartoon Network, 5:30 p.m. ET

Tom and Jerry, the antagonistic animated cat and mouse, have been fighting each other for quite a while – since 1940, in fact, when the first theatrical short featuring them was produced by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Different animators have tackled them over the years, the best being Chuck Jones’ efforts during the 1960s. The most violent Tom & Jerry cartoons were the prototype for “Itchy & Scratchy” on The Simpsons, and TV series featuring the cat and mouse duo have appeared in every decade since, and including, the 1970s. This new version, premiering today, is the latest offering, featuring newly animated cartoons, and the voice of, among others, Jason Alexander. I note its appearance not as a recommendation, but as a nod to TV and animation history.
