THE STORY OF FILM: AN ODYSSEY
October 14, 2013  | By David Bianculli

TCM, 10:00 p.m. ET

Tonight is Part 7, which means we’ve almost reached the halfway point of this excellent, inspirational film history documentary. Tonight’s focus is 1957-1964 – The Shock of the New, Modern Filmmaking in Western Europe. And though we have to wait to catch the exciting American cinema being generated at that same time, this episode allows us to revel in, and marvel at, early works by Federico Fellini out of Italy, and the French filmmakers whose combined efforts were known as cinema’s “New Wave” – a veritable tsunami of creative moviemaking. And later tonight, you’ll be able to catch some of those new waves, including Francois Truffaut’s brilliant 1959 film, The 400 Blows (pictured), at 3:45 a.m. ET.
