MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: "DOWNTON ABBEY"
February 17, 2013  | By David Bianculli  | 2 comments

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Even when the Abbey folks, high-born and low, attend a fair, things aren’t completely without drama. And that goes for this Season 3 finale as well, which aired in the United Kingdom as a Christmas special – but delivered more than a feel-good romp for the occasion.  Check local listings.

Davey - start this thread in the Best Bets comments link on the front page, and you will receive more input there... But meanwhile, yes, quite an ending to a show that has not been afraid to take some large leaps, (and changes) in its story line and cast. I tend to agree with others writing elsewhere that Sunday's tragic loss was perhaps, in part, due to cast members feeling like they had no where else to go in the Downton world. For example, surviving a bomb shell, rising up out of a wheelchair, losing a fiance to rare disease, and then, anguishing over giving her inheritance money to your family -- which desperately needs it -- was all too soap-operatic after a while. Maybe it was time for a bit more serious fare than Downton could provide. –EG

I was expecting lots of comments on last night"s Downton Abbey. It was a very weird experience. First they jump a year ahead, bring in a whole new house and family, throw in a bunch of little events that tie in to nothing (two turned down marriage proposals, a mugging, a brief friendship begun and ended between a Downton housekeeper and her Scottish counterpart, a new maid hired and fired after going after the new estate manager, and topping it off with another birth followed shortly by another death. All I can think is that the new season will mark a total change in location, main characters, and story line.

Thanks David, for clearing up that this was the season finale. None of the listings said that was what it was, or that it was some kind of out-of-sequence special. It would be interesting to know your take on where on earth you think this show is heading.
