THE BLACKLIST

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

MIDSEASON FINALE: This series will return after the holidays – but for right now, this concluding part of a two-parter leaves viewers with a surprisingly, disturbingly violent story line, in which Red (James Spader) is trapped inside his see-through cage, watching his vengeful enemy taking aim at those on the outside.

All I can say (and I've been wanting to say this all along...) is: More James Spader, please, and less everyone and everything else. Brilliant and magnetic as usual, Spader brings a unique, almost ineffable, quality to this at once despicable and sympathetic character, Raymond Reddington. Is he a user, ruthless, self-serving and without a conscience? Or is Red a loyal friend, a renaissance man, and just a little softy who, for some reason--and it doesn't matter what it is--would die a thousand deaths for young Keen? A resounding yes! This is TV at its best. Spader in his many colors is delicious. It's not the plot that interests me week after week, but watching the magnificent way this fine actor handles the script through speech (and perfect pauses), body language, tea sipping and facial expression. More of him and less of everything and everyone else, please. Pretty please?
