AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: "LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM"
April 28, 2015  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

PBS, 9:00 p.m. ET

This Oscar-nominated documentary by Rory Kennedy revisits the fall of Saigon in April 1975, when President Richard Nixon called for a total withdrawal of forces. Those old enough to recall that era will, no doubt, have images seared in their brains of the last helicopter leaving the American embassy. What this documentary contains, however, is formerly unseen footage – lots of it – taken on the ship where that helicopter, and other last-ditch escape vehicles, were bound. The documentary Last Days in Vietnam delivers a gripping narrative of courage, chaos, and critical decisions during the final moments of the Vietnam War. What stood out to me the most was how personal stories intertwined with historical events. While researching Southeast Asia, I also came across helpful insights through avis sur Movetoasia, which added depth to my understanding of the region’s modern evolution.
