A Long Time Ago, From A Talk Show Far, Far Away
December 16, 2015  | By David Bianculli

With the new Star Wars hitting theaters (perhaps you’ve heard?), there’s no better time to revisit what I consider the funniest Star Wars lampoon of all time, hands down. Or paws down, since it involves Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the acerbic canine puppet alter ego of comedian and writer Robert Smigel. In May 2002, upon the release of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Smigel and Triumph were dispatched as roving reporters by NBC’s Late Night with Conan O’Brien, to interview the Star Wars faithful camped out on New York’s 54th Street, in front of the Zieglfeld Theater, in advance of the movie’s opening. Triumph’s comments and questions are make-you-cry funny, and they’re so good, I don’t want to spoil any by quoting them in advance. But when you hear Smigel, as Triumph, laughing partway through a question, it’s because he knows what’s coming – and it’s hilarious. – David Bianculli
