BIANCULLI’S BEST BETS

Amazon Prime Video, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This new anthology series, each episode of which stars different actors and tells of a different love story, presents eight episodes in this first season – and, like any anthology series, range in quality. But the umbrella premise is intriguing, and I’m a big fan of the anthology format. The first episode stars Cristin Milioti, who’s already scored big in another anthology series by starring in the U.S.S. Callister episode of Black Mirror, playing a young woman whose romantic prospects are complicated by her apartment building’s prying doorman. Other episodes feature such stars as Tina Fey and John Slattery, as a couple in therapy, and Anne Hathaway as a woman with bipolar disorder who tries to navigate the dating scene. For full reviews and some background info, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes, David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower, and Mike Hughes' Open Mic.

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Paul Rudd has a dual role here, playing a somewhat hapless man and his genetically engineered, vastly superior clone. Imagine The Odd Couple, with the same man rooming with his fussier, more together lookalike. It’s a goofy premise, but Rudd takes it seriously enough to carry it off. Both roles.

Fox Sports 1, 7:00 p.m. ET

The 2019 postseason is a perfect example why the games are played, rather than just decided beforehand based on reputations and expectations. Two of the most powerful postseason names in baseball, for example, are the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, power teams of their respective coasts. But already in this postseason, the Dodgers have been dispatched by the lowly wild-card Washington Nationals, who are representing the National League in the World Series. And tonight, in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, the Yankees face elimination. They’re behind 1-3, in this best-of-seven series against the Houston Astros. The Yankees have home-field advantage, but if they don’t win tonight to force a Game 6, and then a Game 7, and win those three in a row, then the 2019 World Series will be between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals. And who would have seen that coming?

BBC America, 11:00 p.m. ET

I’m a long-time fan of Graham Norton and his particular brand of talk show, for which he brings all his guests out to share the same couch at the same time – then serves liquor and gets them all to talk – and, unavoidably, listen. Some guests are terrible at having the spotlight shone on someone else (yes, that’s you, Madonna), but others are terrific. And tonight’s lineup is celebrity-heavy even for Norton: his guests tonight include Bruce Springsteen, Robert de Niro, and Paul Rudd. For some instant nostalgia, to see and hear what I said yesterday about this show on our TVWW video blog Best TV Tomorrow, click here.
